Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet.
Melville wrote the well known novel, Moby Dick.
Melville lived in New York.
Melville sailed on a least five different ships: The Saint Laurence, Acushnet, The Lucy Anne, The Charles and Henry, and the United States.
Melville moved to Albany after his father, Allen Gansevoort Melville, lost his small business to financial problems.
Melville went to seek fortune at sea in 1839.
Melville married Elizabeth Shaw in 1847.
When Melville's ship docked at one of the Marquesas islands, Melville fled to the jungle to be later greeted and befriended by a native tribe of the island. He stayed there briefly before sailing with an Australian whaler to Tahiti (where, on the boat got the inspiration for Moby Dick). Melville finally reached home in1844.
